Contact: <thevitalifeco@gmail.com>
2. The Service
Vita provides tools for metabolic health programme support, GLP-1 therapy journey support, care coordination, and related features as we make available. Features may include messaging, scheduling, adherence tracking, health data integrations (where you grant permission), and educational content.
2.1 Not medical advice
The Service is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health provider with any questions about a medical condition or before starting, changing, or stopping any medication. Never disregard professional medical advice or delay seeking it because of something you read or receive through the Service.
Emergency: If you think you may have a medical emergency, call your local emergency number (112 in India) immediately. Do not rely on this Service for emergency medical care.
2.2 No doctor-patient relationship
Use of the Service alone does not create a doctor-patient relationship, prescription, or guaranteed treatment outcome. Any clinical services accessed through Vita are provided by independent licensed medical practitioners who maintain a separate clinical relationship with you governed by applicable law and medical ethics. Vita is a care coordination platform; it is not a medical practice.
2.3 Individual results vary
Clinical outcomes from metabolic health programmes, including those involving GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy, vary significantly between individuals. Outcomes depend on individual metabolic factors, adherence to the prescribed protocol, dietary choices, physical activity, and other clinical variables. No specific outcome is promised or implied.
2A. GLP-1 Receptor Agonist Therapy — Medication Safety Information, Risks & Side Effects
This section provides important safety information about GLP-1 receptor agonist medications (including semaglutide and similar agents) that may be prescribed by licensed clinicians through the Vita platform. Read this section carefully before starting any GLP-1 therapy.
What are GLP-1 receptor agonists?
Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists are a class of injectable medications that mimic a naturally occurring gut hormone. They work by stimulating insulin secretion in response to meals, reducing glucagon secretion, slowing gastric emptying, and reducing appetite signalling in the brain. They are used in clinical medicine for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus and, at specific dosages, for the management of metabolic conditions associated with excess body weight in adults, under a licensed physician's supervision. All prescriptions at Vita are based on individual clinical assessment by a senior endocrinologist.
Regulatory approval status
- Semaglutide (Ozempic — 0.5mg, 1mg, 2mg): Approved by the US FDA (2017) and EMA (2018) for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults. Approved by India's Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO/DCGI) for the same indication.
- Semaglutide (Wegovy — 2.4mg): Approved by the US FDA (2021) and EMA (2023) as an adjunct to a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, for adults with an initial body mass index (BMI) meeting applicable thresholds, with at least one weight-related comorbidity. Indian CDSCO approval status for this specific indication should be confirmed with your prescribing physician at the time of consultation.
- Schedule H classification (India): All GLP-1 receptor agonists are Schedule H drugs under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. They may only be dispensed by a licensed pharmacist against a valid prescription issued by a registered medical practitioner. Vita does not directly dispense medications; prescriptions are fulfilled through licensed pharmacy partners.
Common side effects (very common: affects more than 1 in 10 people)
- Nausea — most common, especially during dose escalation; typically reduces over time
- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting
- Constipation
- Abdominal pain and abdominal discomfort
- Decreased appetite
Common side effects (affects 1 in 100 to 1 in 10 people)
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Injection site reactions (bruising, redness, itching, swelling, pain at injection site)
- Increased heart rate (palpitations / tachycardia)
- Indigestion (dyspepsia), burping, bloating, flatulence
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD / acid reflux)
- Gastritis (stomach inflammation)
- Gallstones (cholelithiasis) — incidence increases with rapid metabolic change; inform your doctor of any sudden upper abdominal pain
- Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) — risk is significantly increased when GLP-1 therapy is combined with insulin or sulfonylurea medications; monitor blood sugar as directed by your prescriber
- Dysgeusia (altered taste perception)
- Transient hair thinning / hair loss (alopecia) — usually resolves; associated with rapid metabolic changes
- Changes in facial volume or skin elasticity — rapid changes in body composition may result in noticeable reduction in subcutaneous facial fat, which some patients experience as altered facial appearance; this is a known consequence of significant metabolic change and is not specific to GLP-1 therapy
Uncommon or serious risks requiring immediate medical attention
- Acute pancreatitis — if you develop persistent, severe abdominal pain that may radiate to the back, with or without vomiting, stop the medication and seek emergency medical attention immediately. GLP-1 therapy should not be re-started after confirmed pancreatitis without specialist review.
- Gallbladder disease / cholecystitis — inflammation of the gallbladder. Seek medical attention for sudden, severe upper-right abdominal pain, fever, or jaundice.
- Acute kidney injury — usually secondary to dehydration caused by gastrointestinal side effects. Maintain adequate fluid intake. Seek medical attention if you experience significantly reduced urination.
- Diabetic retinopathy complications — in patients with pre-existing diabetic retinopathy, rapid changes in glycaemic control early in treatment may temporarily worsen retinopathy. Inform your prescriber of any visual changes.
- Allergic reactions — urticaria (hives), rash, pruritus (itching). Rare: severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) or angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat). Seek emergency care immediately if you experience difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or a severe skin reaction.
- Suicidal ideation and self-harm — post-marketing reports have noted cases of suicidal ideation and self-harm in patients taking GLP-1 receptor agonists. If you experience thoughts of self-harm or suicide, stop the medication and seek emergency mental health support immediately. In India, contact iCall: 9152987821 or Vandrevala Foundation: 1860-2662-345.
Thyroid tumour risk (important long-term safety signal)
Animal studies with semaglutide and other GLP-1 receptor agonists have shown dose-dependent thyroid C-cell hyperplasia and medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). The relevance of these findings to humans is currently uncertain based on available clinical data. However, as a precautionary measure, GLP-1 receptor agonists are contraindicated in individuals with a personal or family history of MTC or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2). Routine monitoring of serum calcitonin or thyroid ultrasound is not recommended for the general population on GLP-1 therapy but may be considered by your clinician based on individual risk factors. Report any neck lumps, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing to your doctor promptly.
Contraindications — who must NOT use GLP-1 receptor agonists
GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy is contraindicated and will not be prescribed by Vita clinicians in the following circumstances:
- Personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)
- Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2)
- Known hypersensitivity to the active substance (e.g., semaglutide) or any excipient in the formulation
- Pregnancy — semaglutide is teratogenic in animal studies; use of effective contraception is required during therapy; inform your prescriber immediately if you become pregnant while on treatment
- Breastfeeding — it is unknown whether semaglutide is excreted in human breast milk
- Type 1 diabetes mellitus — GLP-1 receptor agonists are not indicated for type 1 diabetes
- Diabetic ketoacidosis
- Severe renal impairment (eGFR <15 mL/min/1.73m²) without specialist renal physician review
- Severe gastrointestinal disease, including gastroparesis, severe inflammatory bowel disease, or prior history of intestinal obstruction
- Under 18 years of age
Important precautions and warnings
- Pancreatitis history: Use with caution and only with specialist review if you have a history of pancreatitis.
- Hydration: Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea can cause dehydration. Drink adequate fluids during GLP-1 therapy, especially during dose escalation phases.
- Oral medication timing: GLP-1 receptor agonists slow gastric emptying, which may affect absorption of oral medications. This is particularly relevant for oral contraceptives and time-sensitive antibiotics. Discuss timing of all oral medications with your prescriber or pharmacist.
- Driving and operating machinery: Hypoglycaemia can impair driving ability, particularly when GLP-1 therapy is combined with insulin or sulfonylureas. Assess your individual risk with your prescriber.
- Alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption may increase the risk of pancreatitis. Moderating alcohol intake is recommended during GLP-1 therapy.
- Dose escalation: Starting at the lowest recommended dose and escalating gradually (per prescriber instructions) significantly reduces the incidence and severity of gastrointestinal side effects. Do not accelerate the dose escalation schedule without medical guidance.
- Muscle mass: Rapid changes in body composition may involve some reduction in lean muscle mass. A protein-adequate diet and resistance exercise, as recommended by your care team, help to preserve muscle during treatment.
- Bone density: Long-term changes in bone density during GLP-1 therapy are being studied. Adequate calcium and vitamin D intake and weight-bearing exercise are recommended.
- Surgery and anaesthesia: GLP-1 receptor agonists slow gastric emptying, which increases the risk of pulmonary aspiration during general anaesthesia or sedation. You must inform any surgeon, anaesthesiologist, or dentist that you are taking a GLP-1 receptor agonist well in advance of any planned medical or dental procedure requiring sedation or general anaesthesia. Your prescribing clinician will advise on whether and when to pause therapy before a scheduled procedure.
What to tell your prescriber before starting
Before a Vita clinician prescribes any GLP-1 therapy, you must disclose:
